YOUR LIFE, YOUR STORY (Writing a memoir)
Everyone is on their own long and winding journey full of long and winding experiences that when linked together create a life. In this deeply layered five-week class, which will combine both memoir and personal essay writing, we will use the techniques of fiction writing, playwriting, poetry, journaling, and personal reflection to unlock the stories behind our experiences and use them to communicate with the outside world. We will take inspiration from a variety of non-fiction writers — Ta-Nehisi Coates, Octavia E. Butler, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, and Cristina Henriquez, among others — and learn how to give and receive constructive feedback to develop and deepen our writing. Only one person can live your life, only one person can write your stories. Take your place!

About Michael French
Michael has been a theatre director, writer, actor, and teacher for over twenty years. He has directed over fifty plays, including "Down Here Below" for the Ubuntu Theatre Project in Oakland, "And On... " for Here Theatre in New York, and the "Zoo Story" for the Glasshouse Theatre in London. He has also written five plays, including the award winning "The Rainy Season," and co-written the much acclaimed "The Buddha Prince," a site-specific play on the life of the Dalai Lama. Michael is currently the Artist Development Co-Ordinator for Onye Ozi, the Creative Director at Other Hand Media, and is co-writing an adaptation of Heinrich von Kleist's novella, "The Betrothal of Santo Domingo."

Through original and curated arts & event production, popular arts education and community engagement we create spaces for diverse African stories. Our project, Sufferhead Academy is a series of creative and artistic industry workshops for the culture.
